시놉시스

In December 2004, the owner of the Fast Fame factory secretly moved his business to China, leaving over 150 migrant Philippina workers stranded in Taiwan without work, money, or food. With the help of the Taiwan International Workers’ Association (TIWA), these women organized and fought for the wages and severance payment they were owed, and to reform Taiwanese labor law so that migrant workers in similar situations now have the right to find new employers and stay in Taiwan. TIWA found a unique situation in the Fast Fame dormitory – there were many open lesbian couples, and several of these couples became leaders in the struggle. TIWA’s 2009 documentary, The Lesbian Factory, focused on a three of these couples, and how class, gender, and sexuality intersected in the Fast Fame worker’s struggle. Over the years since they fought side by side to change Taiwanese labor policy, what has happened to these women who crossed oceans for love, family and a better future? In Rainbow Popcorn, TIWA follows the changes in these women’s lives, and those of some of the other women from Fast Fame, in the six years following the factory closing. The TIWA crew visited them at their homes in Luzon, Ilo-Ilo, and Mindanao in the Philippines, and in Dubai, where several of them went after Taiwan to work, where we interviewed them and followed their daily lives. All of the original couples had broken up, and their lives had transformed in some surprising ways. This film delves more deeply into these women’s emotional lives, how they deal with the pressures and tragedies they experience, and how they compare the conditions in the different countries where they have worked. Rainbow Popcorn examines how queer Philippine migrant workers manage their relationships with lovers, former lovers, friends, coworkers and family as they travel constantly across the borders of nations, gender identities, and class.

Susan Chen

Susan Chen was born in 1960. After working as a journalist for several years, she became a full-time labor activist in 1991. Recognizing that the struggles of different groups of workers are inter-related, Susan and other experienced labor organizers established the Taiwan International Workers’ Association (TIWA) in October 1999. TIWA is the first NGO in the country organized by Taiwanese citizens and dedicated to serving migrant workers. The community TIWA serves includes migrant workers and foreign spouses. Aside from developing the exchange of labor experiences between migrant and local workers, TIWA actively campaigns for workers’ rights and helps migrant workers to empower themselves and establish their own organizations. Over the past few years, TIWA has supported the establishment of the KApulungan ng SAmahang PIlipino (KASAPI) and the Ikatan Pekerja Indonesia Taiwan (IPIT). TIWA also actively organizes cultural activities, in order to combat racial and class prejudice in Taiwanese society and promote mutual respect, tolerance, and social justice and equality. In 2003, Susan joined the Full Shot Communication Foundation’s training workshop to learn how to make grass roots documentaries. Since then, along with her work for the Taiwan International Workers’ Association (TIWA), she has been filming her comrades in the movement and producing labor related documentaries. She also coordinated three workshops teaching workers to make their own videos documenting their lives, trying to use visual media to empower and organize workers.
